- Birds in the wild will find shelter from wind behind a ridge or other obstacle. They also face into the wind and rain. Why? Write your prediction/thoughts in your journal. Then compare your answer with ours:
ANSWER:
Birds find shelter behind a ridge or other obstacle to minimize the amount of wind they're dealing with. The reason they face into the wind is because birds are designed to fly, so they are aerodynamic in one direction: forward. If birds are sideways or with their backs to the wind, the wind ruffles their feathers and the cold and rain easily get in. Facing into the wind actually holds their feathers in place, in the same way that their feathers stay in place when they're in flight.
