I heard from my Audubon friend today and he still has 2 Rufous. O here, and he relayed western species move around in winter whatever suits them. That heated or not heated feeders does not influence western species migration/or movement.
So that explains why our young male Rufous took off last week I thought rather early. And why we had a Rufous appear only in January thru February 2023.
He had 16 degree weather colder than us, refilled feeders 3 times today bc they kept freezing as he is further north from central Houston where we are located.
I put 2 sugar water feeders back out when sun hit their spot in 28 degrees. They did not freeze at all bubble wrapped. We stayed below 32 all day until 5 p.m. There are flocks of migrant American goldfinches doing a weather fall out with House finches coming to 7 song bird feeders two days now. They are real thirsty with me constantly trying to keep a non frozen bird bath.
I hope any early migrating hummingbirds hold off 1 more day. But it looks like from what songbirds are coming in rubythroats may be early this year. Spring is first week of March this year.
