Sightings report image

Date: 04/29/2024

Number: 3

At 4:30pm it was 83 degrees F, sunny, with 60% humidity, and light winds from the E. Last night we had strong thunderstorms and 2.3 inches of rainfall. I saw two monarchs flying around in our yard (both seemed to have faded wings). Going back in to get my camera, I lost sight of them. So I walked to an upper meadow with a lot of blooming prairie plantains. It also has both Asclepias viridis and Asclepias linearis plants.

That's when I spotted this female monarch nectaring from Asclepias linearis flowers (Slim milkweed). She has bright, fresh wings and seems to be of the next generation. She nectared from multiple slim milkweed plants and also rested on wild grapevine leaves.
