Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/30/2024

Number: 1

One day earlier than my previous earliest record. The apricot blossoms have been done for over a week. Normally they come when the apricot is blossoming. I was standing at the kitchen sink, looking out the window at all of my other Spring arrivals and migrants when I saw the quick flash of a hummingbird. She flew up to the orange coloured feeder that would normally hold jelly for the Orioles but is currently my platform for inshell peanuts for the Blue Jays. After a quick dart around to the other feeders, she realised there was no nectar and off she went. I quickly made a batch of nectar and put it in the freezer to cool it down while I washed out my brand new hummingbird feeder and hung it up but she didn’t come back. Holding out hope for a visit tomorrow. I will have my cell phone ready to get her photo. There are some blooms on my columbines so hopefully she got some nectar from them although I didn’t witness it because the columbines are in the front garden. It has been unseasonably warm for quite a while now. Temperatures well above 20 all week long plus way more rain than we need.
