We depend on leaves for the food we eat and the air we breathe. The leaves take in sunlight, water,
and carbon dioxide and use them to make food and oxygen. This happens in little green circles in
the leaves called chloroplasts. Inside these green circles is a pigment called chlorophyll which is
the stuff you get in your jeans when you get them grass stained. Chlorophyll captures the sun's
energy which powers the food making activities in the leaves. If we didn't have leaves, there
wouldn't be any place for food making (called photosynthesis, Mrs. Kloewer says) to happen. We
wouldn't have anything to eat or breathe. Even if we don't eat the leaves, the animals we eat do eat the
leaves so that we still depend on them for food.
