The mercury gets into the air from the coal burned in power plants, like
the one by us at Cohasset, MN. The rain falls from the sky and takes
mercury with it into lakes and oceans. The plankton take up the water and
the mercury goes with the water. Then a minnow eats the plankton and a
fish eats the minnow. The loon eats the fish and other fish and then the
loon starts to get the mercury built up in its body.

Answer from Mrs. Barle's third grade class at Vandyke Elementary School in
    Coleraine Minnesota.
