  • Challenge Question #2

Joan Berger, East Hills School, Roslyn, NY (K12ROBZJ@vaxc.hofstra.edu)
    Mon, 03 Mar 1997 09:55:15 -0400 (EDT)

This is Jake Kimmelman and Valerie Glibbery , the manatee team from
Mrs. Berger's 5th grade class from the East Hills School in Roslyn, LI. We
subtracted 1,709 manatees counted in February from 2,229 counted in January to
get 520 more counted in January. This is about a 23% change.
(520 is what percent of 2229?... 520=N x 2229 and we solved this number
    sentence)
Dr. Ackerman explains that there was a toxin from the microorganism,
Gymnodinium breve (red tide), in the water and it killed 151 animals.
Collisions with watercraft also resulted in a record 60 deaths. Thus the count
    was much lower.
