    I think male robins return before the females because they can
    gather food and start building a nest for the female. The female
    can lay her eggs and have food to eat when she returns.
    The advantage of this early arrival is that there will be plenty of
    food to eat. The disadvantage is that it might be a little cold in the
    beginning of spring, which means they might have trouble adapting
    to a cold environment.
