    Journey North:
    We put two red emperor bulbs in water in a jar with
    marbles. We started the indoor bulbs on November 4. Our bulb only had
    37 roots on January 8. The picture of the bulb in the Washington post
    has more roots than our forced bulb. We wonder why the roots are
    different. We wonder if the Washington Post's bulb will bloom first
    because it has more roots. Does the soil provide more nutrients than
    just water? Where are the bulbs growing that are pictured in the
    Washington Post? What has the weather been like there?
