The whole class worked on individual plans to solve this problem. We
had proposals that included using area and models, using estimation, and
pure guessing. We decided to use estimation. We thought there would
be an average of 17 butterflies in each envelope. We then estimated
that there were an average of 65 envelopes in each bag. We estimated
that there were 30 bags delivered. So

65 x 17 = 1105 butterflies in each bag

1105 x 30 = 33,105 butterflies sent to Journey North. We found out
that was approx 6000 more butterflies than citizens of Ireland. It was
almost the same as amount of butterflies as the amount of citizens in
Ireland and Norther Ireland UK put together! That is a lot of
butterflies!
