I think Monarchs know when to leave Mexico, because the Earth spins,
Mexico gets colder, and the U.S.A. gets warmer. I also think they leave
Mexico because of their instinct. And I think if they leave to early, It
would be to cold for them to live in the U.S, and I think if they leave to
late, they won't be able to make it to Mexico.

I think the Monarchs knows when to leave because they canfeel the cold.
If they leave too early it might not be warm yet. If they leave too late
they will die because of the cold.

What I think is Monarchs have a sentes of what season it is. When it is
hot out the Monarchs will go North. If the Monarchs leav early it will get
cold and their wings will get cripld because of the cold.

===================================================

Diya Sikka, Ellington School

Grade 3

I think they have been doing the same thing for so many tears they just
know what to do. If they leave too early it will still be cold and they
will die because of the coldness. If they leave too late it will be too
hot and they will get burnt. Also there will be kids outside and they may
kill them or keep them and not know what to feed them and when it has to
be let go.

I think they know when to leave Mexico because they can feel the heat
coming toward them and prbably see it too. If they leave from Mexico too
early or too late, I think they might parish because it might be too cold
or hot in America.

---------------------------------------------------
Sean McCulla - Ellington School
Quincy, Illinois, 3rd grade
Mr. Smith's class

I think Monarchs should know when its time to leave because they can tell
if it's getting hotter or colder. If they leave too early they could die
because it would be too cold.

The Monarchs know when it is time to migrate by their
instinct to leave when it is time.
But if some leave to early or late they mite die.

I think the Monarchs know how to leave Mexico just at the right time
because they have been doing it for thousands of years.
I think if they leave to early or to late they will die because of the old
weather.

I think the Monarchs know when to leave Mexico when it starts to cool off.
Also soon all of the food will be eaten. If the Monarchs leave from
Mexico to early then they will be one of the first ones there and they
will not be able to mate. If they leave to late then they will freeze.

I think they know when to leave Mexico when they feel cold breezes and
when they feel cold. If they leave too early they might be one of the
first Monarchs. If you leave too late you might freeze.

I think that how the Monarchs know when to leave is for one
thing it is their Instinet and I bet they notice that as the days get
hotter the days also get longer! I think that if the Monarchs leave to
early or to late they will either get frost bite or lose their lives!

If they lav too early they will died or too late they might die. They
poblby know because it gets a little colder. Then they go.

Cheyenne Dedmon, 2nd grade
Quincy, Illinois U.S.A
Mr. Smith's Class

I think that they know when to leav because of the weather like if it is
hot or cold.If it the Monarch leavs to early it might get to cold for the
Monarch to servive. If it leavs late it will be to cold for the Monarch to
servive because spring and summer would be over and it would be begining
of winter.

Dear Journy North,
I think Monarchs know when it is time to leave Mexico when it is cooler
where they are. Probably because on the mountins on the fur trees it gets
cool so they want to find a warmer place to go.
I think if the monarchs leave to early they will not get very far.
They may not get very far because where they are traveling could get to
cold. If they leave to early they will freeze because they wait too long.

=====================================================

Jessica Olson, Grade 3 Quincy Illinois USA

Dear Journey North,I think that the Monarchs Know when it's time to go
home when it gets dark earlyer and thats when the Monarchs know when to go
home. If the Monarchs come home to early they might die and if they come
to late their babies might die also.

===================================================

Ryan Khanna
Grade two
Quincy Illinois - U.S.A

I think the monarchs know when to leave when the weather starts geting
warmer in Mexico. I think if they leave to early they will starve to
death and if the leave to late they might not find a home when they get to
America.
====================================================

Raleigh Shade

I think the Monachs leave Mexico because when the heat comes up toward
Illinois it comes out of Mexico.
If the Monachs leave to early they get old and cold with out other
butterflys to cluster with.

Grant Bolton

3rd grade

Dear Journey North
I think the Monarchs know when to leave when it gets a little bit warm so
they know it will soon be warm up north.
If they leave too early or too late they might get too cold and there
probably wouldn't be enough food for them.

They know when to go when they feel warm and see light. If the
Monarchs leave to early when they get to Quincy it will
be to cold and they will die. If they get there to late Winter will come
soon and they won't leave so they would die.

Monachs know when to leave Mexico because, they feel the warmth and see
the light.

If the Monachs leave too early, they will freez or get dehydrated.
If they leave too late they will not get back here in time for summer or
they won't lay their eggs soon enough.

I think it's by instinct and the feel of summer.
If they leave early it's OK but if they leave late they'll freeze on the
way down.

Grade 3 - Mr. Smith's Class

Dear Journey North,
I think the Monarchs leave Mexico when they sense the cold on their
antenas. If the Monarchs leave too early or too late I think that they
will get sick and die. But I think that wouldn't happen because they would
see that most of the monarchs were leaving.
