Challenge Question #6

Students in Mrs. Uebner's 5/6 grade at Mariposa Elementary
School in Mariposa, California answers:
#1. Our class thinks the monarchs know when to go because
many things change in Mexico. The temperature gets much
warmer in Mexico and the sky clears up. They can tell that they
have been in Mexico for a long time, a whole season, and must
feel that they've been there long enough. They have a natural
instinct that when it starts getting too hot, it's time to migrate to
cooler climates. They can feel it with the the new season.
#2. There are many bad consequences for leaving Mexico too
early and too late. If they leave too late, the weather is way too
hot. The monarchs have very delicate bodies and can't stand
severe heat. Also, all their food will dry up without enough water.
If they leave too early, they have to travel in cold weather,
often in storms. They can't handle it. In the winter, their food is too

little and they will die.
