Challenge Question: How Will El Nino Effect Tulip Growth?

Mrs. Herman's 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Math Classes from Laytonville Middle
School (39=B0 North, 123=B0 West) have been studying El Nino so that we can
figure out how it will effect tulip growth. El Nino is warm water from the
sea. It is a series of storms that comes from the sea. El Nino causes
temperature and weather changes. El Nino effects tulip growth because where
we live we get a large amount of rain from El Nino. It has been windy and
rainy. It has rained for 34 out of the last 40 days here. In some areas,
there has been flooding and mud slides. Our school had to close down last
=46riday due to a three day long power outage.

All the rain from El Nino can cause water erosion. If it gets flooded then
the tulips could get washed away. Another way El Nino could effect tulip
growth is since the ground is muddy the wind could pull the tulip up out of
the ground. The rain gives the tulips more water than the need. The tulips
could drown.

When the wind blows then it can blow the tulip down into muddy ground and
they might get stuck. Some tulips have short stems and some have long
stems; the ones with long stems could be pulled up out of the ground. The
flowers' petals will fall off from the wind and rain. They could become
deformed. Maybe the tulip doesn't grow if the weather keeps changing.

Tulips need sunlight and El Nino makes it rain so much that they are not
getting enough sunlight.

We don't have to worry about them not getting enough water. They might
bloom later.
All this rain may make the tulips more beautiful.
