Challenge Question #7
"At what altitude do monarchs disappear from view? Describe a simple
experiment you could do to test this. In your experiment, test the height
monarchs disappear from view, both from the naked eye and when using
binoculars."
We figured that we can see about as far up as we can see just looking
forward. Using this idea, we made a scale model of a Monarch by scanning in
a picture from the National Audubon North American Insect field guide and
printing out a 4 inch color picture of one. Audubon says average size is 3
and a half to 4 inches. One of us held the Monarch picture and walked away
holding the picture out at arm's length until the other two of us could no
longer see it. We then measured the distance to the point at which the
picture disappeared. We measured 290 feet 10 inches on a hazy day. We
figured a clear day with clouds in the sky would probably improve visibility
somewhat.
We didn't test with binoculars.
