According to Collier's Encyclopedia, honeydew is the name given to sweet
secretions exuded by aphids and scale insects. The manna in the Bible was
produced by the tamarisk scale. According to Collier's: "The manna was
formed by the droppings of sugary waste on the leaves of the plant, and the
consequent formation of layers. It is still collected and used by the Arabs
for sugar in the Sinai mountains and parts of Iraq. Honeydew is greatly
sought by ants, and, because of its food value, plant lice are protected by
ants."
