    Hi Anne,
We have studied humpback whales in our Science class with our
teacher, Mrs. Botsko. We use the program, "The Voyage of the Mimi".
From our studies, we have learned that to identify humpback whales
from one another, scientists compare their black and white patterns on
the underside (ventral side) of their flukes (tails).
We've learned that these patterns are like finger prints and each
humpback whale has a different pattern and can be identified by these.
Scientists take pictures of these flukes and can then identify these
    whales later when seen.
Thank you for writing us and informing us about the whales you
study. We all find it very interesting and hope that the humpback
whales are safe from extinction now.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Botsko's Science Classes
