The reason researchers have been seeing the whales in the order of
females and juveniles, adult males and mother-calf pairs is apparent.
Females and juveniles are together because the juveniles need to be with
a female adult for care, protection, and possible feeding until they
reach adulthood. The adult females already had their calfs, so they
broke away from their mates. The adult males are with the mother's calf
pairs because the mothers are ready to give birth and the males are
there to protect them.
