The reason that tree swallows can survive cooler weather than other swallows is because they arre very good at finding abandoned woodpecker holes and other old cavities in trees. It would be warmer and more protected in this location than in a nest in a more open area. Their guts help them because they have the longest intestines of any swallow and they eat dried berries which are available before the insects are. All other swallows eat only insects.
