I have watched an adult eagle catch a black duck. I observe Harbor Seals in
Hancock Maine and an eagle nest is very near the seal Haul out. The newly
fledged chick was on a tree behind me and we both watch intently as the
adult tried to catch the duck. One adult eagle circled and tried to snatch
it out of the water 36 times, each time the duck dove. This adult gave up
and sat panting on the seal haul out. A second adult took up the chase,
finally landing on the water on top of the duck (osprey are much better able
to do the surface snatch). The eagle lay there, floating on outstretched
wings for several seconds (presumable drowning the duck), then started
paddling with its wings back to shore (it took 15 minutes), dragging the
duck with it. The chick was very excited squeeing and cheeping behind me and
took off as soon as its parent landed on shore, near the first adult. The
adults stood by while the chick ate, then picked at the remains. Eagles are
devoted and patient parents. I wonder if the duck was unhealthy for it only
dove, did not attempt to fly off even when it had the opportunity.
