    The nictitating membrane is an extra, clear, retracting covering which
    comes up from beneath the lower lid of the adult eagle's eyes. This
    membrane is used to protect the eyes while feeding the young, whom do
    not have good eyesight. While pecking at the food, the chicks may
    accidentally damage the adult eagle's eyes.
