When there is a severe storm, we think the manatees go deeper in the water. If the manatees stay at the top of the water, they would be caught in the currents and they could get lost. The deeper you go, the calmer the water. Since manatees are mammels and have to breathe, they swim towards shore and like Gulliver, they swim into a channel where it is calmer and safe.
