Scientists use tracking tags that use a very high frequency and Argos monitored radio tags. The tags are also equipped with a third transmitter. There can be many reasons for the tracking to be interrupted and inaccurate. The quality of the location plotted by the satellites varies depending on whether the manatee is at the surface when the satellite passes. Also, the data can be misread when there are a lot of structures or vegetation comes in the way. Thirdly, the manatee might have gone too far out of range for the hydrophone to be used. Finally, transmitters can be damaged or completely destroyed when it is hit by a boat or eaten by an alligator.
