Dear Journey North,
I'm not sure what to suggest about this question that I asked last week. But I wondered if it may be happening because it is getting warmer earlier in the season--maybe because of global warming. If so, this could signal to the whoopers that it is time to be heading north sooner. Another possibility might be they are learning that the available nesting habitat is shrinking, so they are more anxious to get back and claim their territory. This would only be likely, of course, for the ones who have several years of experience, but others could follow their lead.
