"If things are so great on the wintering grounds, why do these tiny birds make the long, hard journey north?"
I think that the hummingbirds all stay together on the wintering grounds, eating and staying warm. In the spring, the hummingbirds want more space to live. Every spring I see at least 10 hummingbirds that nest in our greenhouses. I think that some of the hummingbirds come to Vermont to have more room, because only some of the hummingbirds come to Vermont. They need more space to have their families.
