Mystery Class 1999 entry; Ajax HS

Here is our entry for the Mystery Class Contest 1999. The class this =
year is a combined Grade 12 Advanced, doing the Travel & Tourism course, =
and Grade 11 Advanced, doing the Natural Disasters curriculum. They have =
worked together on this project in 4 mixed, competitive groups, and thus =
we are competing at the Grade 12 level. Comments and highly selected =
URL=92s are at the end=85.

Our school is Ajax High School in the Durham District Board of =
Education. Ajax is located about 25 miles East of Toronto in Ontario at =
43d53m N and 79d0m W.

Comments:=20

MC#1: Saipan. This was a tough one as the sunrise/sunset data indicated =
Guam, but Guam is not part of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, =
which does have 14 islands. The equinox data indicated a longitude for =
Saipan, rather than Guam, but this took us a while to realize. One is at =
144d 45m E and the other is exactly 1 degree further East. Confusing eh? =
This site http://www2c.airnet.ne.jp/m-ito/saipan/north.html shows the =
Banadero, or the last command post, in northern Saipan.

MC#2: Vestmannaeyjar (Heimaey). Finding this location was fun, although =
the sunrise/sunset data appears to be for Reyjkavik, capital of Iceland. =
Usually at least one of the sites reflects the news and Keiko, the star =
of Free Willy was certainly news. Keiko=92s home may be seen mapped at =
http://www.eyjar.is/eyjar/kort.html=20

MC#3: Cape Town. A number of web sites record the blast at Cape Town=92s =
Planet Hollywood. This resolved uncertainty brought on by sunrise/sunset =
data that indicated a location north of the city itself. One of the news =
accounts can be read at =
http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,3506,00.html.

MC#4: Istanbul. After a week or two of sunrise/sunset data indicating a =
location in Southern Turkey, things settled down to point to the same =
city location as indicated by the cultural clues. After all only one =
city links Asia and Europe, and (in the words of the song), it is =
Istanbul, not Constantinople=85. A map can be viewed at =
http://cicoda.hypermart.net/istmap.htm.

MC#5: McMurdo. This is a fascinating location of course, and while Mr. =
Ward knew McMurdo was a favourite of the JN crew, and that the trusty =
cook might be stirring the broth once more, none of the rest of us did. =
The photo clue showed a cross, which might have been the one on =
Telegraph Hill, but it didn=92t look quite right. It turned out to be =
Vince=92s Cross, Hut Point (for Capt Scott) and it can be seen at =
http://penguincentral.com/pics/gallery/VinceCross_sm.jpg

MC#6: BSB. Brunei was quickly established as the probable location, and =
knowing that it was the capital of the country in the last clue allowed =
us to zero in on Bandar Seri Begawan --- one of our favourite place =
names. This site has a fine guide to activities in the town: =
http://cityguide.lycos.com/asia/malaysia/BRNBandarSeriBegawan.html.

MC#7: San Diego: This was not too hard to ZOOm in on. Here is a link to =
the San Diego Zoo site, which can lead you to the giraffes=85

http://www.sandiegozoo.com/special/zoo-featured/index.html?siteloc=3D2

MC#8: Sao Paulo. Knowing that this was the capital of its state lead =
easily to Sao Paulo Brazil, and this site, =
http://www.saopaulofc.com.br/, seems appropriate for this soccer-happy =
city.

MC#9: Near The Cross. Finding this location was made extremely difficult =
by the use of Sunrise/sunset data for Dublin by the tricky clue setters =
until the final week 10 clues. Geoclock located the intersection of the =
terminator near the 7d 5m W line of longitude. A very careful search of =
a 1:500,000 map of Ireland that Mr. Ward (who like many people on the =
planet has a bit of Irish in him) just happened to have handy uncovered =
a little place labelled "The Cross" just south of the Finn River, west =
of Strabane. A very determined Net hunt yielded this site: =
http://www.iol.ie/~dromore/peace/funday.htm which we expect shows people =
from The Cross and Killygordon known to members of our mystery class!

MC#10: Waimea. The Grand Canyon of the Pacific was the Waimea Canyon --- =
and Mr. Ward had been there but wasn=92t allowed to contaminate our =
group efforts by telling us until the end, when we pooled our "Best =
Guesses" into a class entry. We managed to find a map of the track of =
Huricane Iniki, at http://www.eqe.com/publications/iniki/ini2b150.gif =
and ambiguity was removed when a list of schools in Hawaii let us =
uncover Waimea Canyon school in the little town of Waimea at =
http://hpi.www.com/hisch/zip17.html. The sunrise/sunset data for this =
site appeared to be for Honolulu throughout the contest, which made it =
nice and difficult.
