Symbolic Monarch Butterfly Migration Update: October
15, 2002
The First Stop: Staging Grounds
in Minnesota
Butterflies
are now arriving by the thousands at the Journey North Headquarters in Minnesota.
The sound of delivery trucks stopping outside the office is heard several
times a day. We knew to expect UPS, but what a parade! FedEx Air, FedEx
Ground, U.S. Mail, Airborne Express, "Speedee Delivery," teachers
in cars and even one on foot! The
pile of packages gets higher and higher every day. It's amazing to see
where the Symbolic Monarchs come from. In a single armful are butterfly
packages from Michigan, Kansas, New Jersey, Oregon, Maine, California,
Iowa, New Hampshire, and Ohio.
Here are pictures, and a little movie, so you
can see how it looks on this end:
The Next Step: Packing for Mexico
For the next three weeks, all packages will be opened. The butterflies will
be re-packed into big boxes so they can all go through Mexican customs together.
Your butterflies will be mixed with thousands from across the continent,
just as the real monarchs are merging together right now as they approach
Mexico.
Mark your Calendar!
