Hummingbird Migration Update: April 27, 2006

Today's Report Includes:

"Data Only" Update This Week
As you look at the Ruby-throated hummingbird map this week, be sure to compare the progress in the Midwest and the lack of progress in the Northeast where the hummingbirds are holding up in MA! In the Midwest, a hummingbird has already reached 47 N near Duluth, MN, and many have been sighted across the Midwest as far as 46 N. In contrast, the migration's leading edge on the East Coast has stalled out at 43N. Hummingbirds haven't advanced northward much since April 15. Is this delay due to cooler temperatures? Could it be the prevailing north winds of late? What do you think? Watch for a full report next week.

Is Fuel the Limiting Factor?
Average Temperatures
Apr. 16-22, 2006
We all need fuel. Today the news is full of reports about the precious fuel that powers our cars and industry. We need fuel to make so many systems go. What about the hummingbirds? What kind of food/fuel do they need to survive? Look where the hummers are on today’s map. We know that hummingbirds eat nectar from flowers, tiny insects, and sugar water. Can we use today’s map to show us where hummingbirds are finding these kinds food (fuel), and why they may be held up at 43N?

* Hint: Study this week’s map and last week’s average temperature map.

Now write 2 – 3 sentences about hummingbird arrival and average temperatures.
