• The symbols on the map, called "wind barbs," describe the direction the winds came from that day, and the wind's speed.
• The first ruby-throated hummingbirds to cross were sighted along the Gulf Coast of Florida, Alabama, Texas and Mississippi during this time.
• Ruby-throated hummingbirds leave their wintering grounds from the coast around Mexico's Yucatan Penninsula, and cross the Gulf of Mexico when winds are favorable.
