Moving North Slow and Steady!
A cold Spring storm system barreled through the West earlier this week with blustery winds over 45 miles per hour roaring through the range! Within 24 hours temperatures in some locations plummeted over 20 degrees, halting monarch movement further north. Most new first sightings stayed south in Arizona with just slight northward movement in New Mexico before the cold front swept through.

A cheer filled the air as monarchs surged north into the Nevada deserts this week cruising the Colorado River flyway! Meanwhile, monarchs also journeyed north into Arizona and New Mexico as new sightings appeared. Almost all of the new observations reveal worn and frayed monarchs. A few new sightings appeared in California along the coast near San Francisco this week as well. Monarchs are now spanning four states in the West!

While there are limited new sightings in California, monarchs are beginning to appear in new regions of Arizona and New Mexico this week! Now we can see a fuller picture of their movement. Although we may not know their exact origin, we can look at new monarch sightings to help us learn more about the spring migration in the West.

A Few Sightings Reported!
Last week there were only a few monarch sightings with the exception of reports in the desert regions of the California’s Coachella Valley and in the Arizona cities of Phoenix and Tucson. This week things are different. There is finally news of more monarch sightings!

Dear friends,
The moment for our farewell to Monarchs this season has arrived. On Monday, March 25 our regal butterflies simply decided it was time to leave. Most had already left by the time I arrived to El Rosario Sanctuary at 8-9 am.

Looking for Monarchs!
The rains paused and warm temperatures swept through the California coastal regions this weekend. Now citizen scientists are hiking trails to look for monarchs and to check if milkweed is up in the nearby foothills. We look forward to hearing from them as they return and share their news. Unfortunately, more rain is coming this week.

Dear friends,
We all -- locals, experts, fans, children to seniors in all families, foreign and local visitors -- continue peeping into our forests, looking up to the sky and relaxing our upper back muscles every once in a while from twisting our necks around and around, all day long, so that we can see the last, final leaving occurring any moment now!
