Dear Monarch watchers,
What a joy to receive a packet of butterflies symbolic of the friendship of
those who love monarch butterflies. Our Nature Classes at Jubilee Community
Church in Asheville, NC received butterflies from the places listed below.
Thanks to everyone who cared for the butterflies we sent last fall! We
haven't heard from anyone receiving them yet, but are sure they are in good
hands.
MI -Ypsilanti, Michigan: Ardis Renaissance Academy (1)
WI- Chetek, Wisconsin: Roselawn Elementary (4)
OH- Greenwich, Ohio: South Central Elem/Jr. High (2)
NY- East Greenbush, NY: Red Mill Elementary (3)
MN- Mountain Iron, MN: Merritt Elementary (5)
The packet of butterflies we received was cared for by a 6th grade student
named Antonio Miran Dacolin from the Amadonervo School in Ocampo. (We hope
we read the spelling of the handwriting correctly!) It had lots of cheerful
confetti in the packet and was a real celebration when the colorful dots
and stars sprinkled about from the envelopes with the butterflies.
The orange tagged butterflies were from folks visiting the Migration
Exhibit while at the overwintering sanctuaries of the butterflies in
Mexico. Their handwritten names were on orange tags attached to butterflies
from students from these schools:
NY- Brooklyn NY: Public School 172
IN- Trafalgar, IN: Indian Creek Intermediate School
GA- Snellville, GA: RL Norton Elementary
MA- Orleans, MA: Lighthouse Charter School
CT- Orange, CT: Pace Brook (spelling?)
OH- Toledo, OH: Arlington School
Ontario, Canada: King George Public School Kirkland Lake, ON
Ontario, Canada: JR Henderson PS, Kingston, ON
Our green tagged butterfly, tagged on the Monarch's Migration Pathway was
made by Nohemi Villegas Hernandez in Saltillo, Coahuilla, Mexico
We want to thank all the folks at Journey North for sponsoring the Symbolic
Butterfly Migration again this year. It is well worth all the hard work and
effort because our class is going to map where all the butterflies came
from on a wall map and where we think they are heading. We hope to write to
each student's school during our monarch project this summer. And thank
you, Journey North, for reminding all of us to do our part to protect the
summer breeding grounds of the monarchs while our Mexican friends protect
the overwintering sites. We are raising lots of milkweeds to send home with
each student to plant in their butterfly gardens.
