How many symbolic butterflies do you think are flying to Mexico?
* First we added 17 hours and 13 hours for a total of 30 hours.
* To find 75% of 30 hours, we first said that half (or 50%) would be 15 and then half again (25%) would be 7.5. Then we added these for a total of 22.5 hours.
* To find the total number of hours, we added 30 and 22.5. The answer was 52.5 total hours.
* Next, we divided 581.5 envelopes by the 30 hours and found that 19.3 envelopes were processed per hour.
* So, if the total number of hours worked was 52.5 and 19.3 envelopes are processed each hour, then a total of 1,013.25 envelopes were processed.
* In each envelope there was an average of 21.61 butterflies. So to find the total number, we multiplied by 1,013.25 and found a total of 21,896.3325.
Our estimate is 21,896 butterflies.
We are a class of fourth and fifth grade G/T students from the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk School District (A.W.Becker School).
