Humpback whales are voluntary breathers. This is helpful because, if
they were involuntary and tried to breathe underwater, they would
drown. If they can control their breathing, and come up for air when
they need it, then they won't die from drowning. Humpback whales
sleep on top of the water, or float, so that the blowhole will stay
above the water. This way, they can sleep without having to wake up in
order to breathe.
