St. Joan of Arc 5th Grade students (LA, CA) -

We learned that as the monarch butterflies fly to Mexico, the gross geographic features compress their flight path. The Gulf of Mexico and Mexico's Sierra
Madre Oriental Mountains cause this funneling. As the mountains change direction, the monarch butterflies seem to use their instincts to follow the valleys and mountain crests to the Sanctuary Region.
