if there were 11 boxes last year and 40,347 butterflies, then we could
divide that number by 11 to find out how many went in each box. Then we
multiplied how many butterflies went in each box by 13 to figure out how
many there were.
We tried another way too but we didn't like that number. We found in the
Journey North archives from last year that there were about 400
butterflies in a cubic foot of a butterfly pile (last year). We
multiplied 88 x66 x 16 to find out how big the pile was this year (it was
120x120x12 last year) and then divided by 1728 because that is how many
cubic inches there are in a cubic foot and then took that answer times
400 butterflies but that only got us 21,511 butterflies and we think
there are a lot more than that so we're guessing the other number. Maybe
there are more butterflies in a cubic foot this year. It would depend on
how people made them.
