    Tom says the population of the main flock usually decreases because every 10 years there is a natural down swing. Then, the cranes' numbers grow for the rest of the decade. However in 2000, 20001 and 2002 there was an unusual loss of cranes. This was probably due to bad winters and they could not find food.
