One of the environmental clues that might tell robins it is time to switch from eating fruits to worms would be when the weather conditions get mild and it starts to rain. Worms start to come to the surface in wet seasons. Another environmental clue would be when the soil thaws and gets mushy after the snow and ice melts. The third environmental clue would be when there is a scarce amount of berries and they have to turn to worms for food.
