Challenge Question #1: The Ruby-throated Hummingbird has to cross the Gulf of Mexico on its journey north. The Rufous Hummingbird starts migrating earlier because the Ruby-throated Hummingbird has to cross the Gulf of Mexico. The Ruby-throated gets home earlier because it has to fly nonstop across the body of water so therefore it can leave later than the Rufous.
