The Ruby-Throated hummingbird flies over a large body of water called the gulf of Mexico. The Rufous huummingbird starts earlier than the Ruby-throated hummingbird for migration. This is because the Rufous hummers are flying over a land mass, so they can stop by, and rest which will take more time. On the other hand, the Ruby-Throated hummers have to fly over a stretch of water without stopping, and that would take less time.
