"What is the range and what is the median of Lanny Chambers's first arrival dates for Ruby-throated hummingbirds in St. Louis? When do you think Lanny's first hummer will arrive in 2004?"

Between the years 1994 and 2003, the earliest arrival date of a hummingbird was April 16 and the latest was on April 23. The range of dates for sightings would be April 16-April 23, which would be seven days or a week. The earliest sightings took place in the years 2000 and 1998. The latest sighting was in the year 2003. To find the median, I put all the numbers in order from greatest to least: 16 16 17 19 19 19 20 20 22 23. I crossed the numbers out from each side and eventually ended up with 19 and 19.

Since the mean of 19 and 19 is 19, I got the date April 19th as the median.

I think that Lanny Chambersís first hummingbird arrival date will be on April 15. I have noticed that almost every the years 1998, 2000, and 2002 have earlier arrival dates then those of the odd years. Since there has been a trend of hummingbirds arriving earlier this year, I estimated the date to be on April 15th, 2004.
