The male hummingbird is molting because in the winter it's very cold. The bird's old feathers aren't thick enough to keep the bird warm during the low temperatures. The bird's need new, thick, healthy feathers for warmth and protection. It benefits the bird because it keeps the bird comfortable and able to undergo any harsh conditions. Also, through any type of weather it will be able to find food, and fly from location to location.
