There are not many variables that can contribute to the early migration of the hummingbird. The first is the weather though. It got warmer early this year for a short span. The hummingbirds might have thought that it was warming up for good. The reason the Rufous shows up before the ruby-throated is because its breeding area is farther north and west than the ruby-throated.
