Challenge Question #7

From: Karen Busher <karen.busher@frco.k12.va.us>

Challenge Question #7
"Where do you predict monarchs will appear next? Name the next 10 states and provinces, in order. (With your answer, explain why you think the migration will travel as you predict. Also give reasons to support your hypothesis.)"

Mrs. Busher?s class from Wirtz, Virginia thinks the 10 states will be:
1. California
2. Oklahoma
3. South Carolina
4. Virginia
5. Maryland
6. Delaware
7. Oregon
8. New Jersey
9. New York
10. Connecticut

Because the butterflies have wintered in California the students think the butterflies will appear there next. Oklahoma is close to states where the migration seems to be strong so this is their next choice (plus it is warmer there than in other states of their choice). South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware will be next because these states are along the east coast and they are in order by southern most to northern most because the climate is usually warmer in the south. The 7th state is Oregon because they think the butterflies will migrate here from California when it gets warmer. Last 3 of the 10 will be New Jersey, New York and Connecticut because of their location along the east coast (it is still cold there so maybe it will warm up in the next week or two).
