First Nesters This Spring: Eastern Flock
Female #38-08 (DAR) and her mate #703 completed migration to Necedah NWR in Wisconsin on March 11. This pair had the first confirmed Whooping crane nest of the season. Bev Paulan of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources conducted an aerial tracking flight on March 26 and discovered #38-08 (DAR) and #703 incubating eggs! On her April 4 flight, Bev spotted the pair walking along a tree line not far from their nest. Have they abandoned it? Trackers do their best to keep an eye on the situation. Everyone hopes the summer will bring crane babies to grow this new flock.
