Bites vs. Babies?
Black flies that bite are a problem in nesting season when cranes must sit quietly on their nests. The parents can endure the flies biting only so long before they must escape. Baby cranes won't hatch if eggs are abandoned. Are black flies a main reason why Whooping cranes have had limited nesting success at Necedah National Wildlife Refuge? Discover how biologists are trying to find the answer at this black fly research site.
