Just a quick update today to give you the latest news from Peter Nye and data for your map. Study the map --especially check out birds U25 and P91. March is here-- a very busy season for Bald eagles! Stay tuned for a full update next week.

Field Notes from Eagleye Nye
Hello Journey North
It’s been a quiet week. Kathy,
Sarah and I did trap on 2 March, but it snowed heavily all day and
we had no
luck. We noticed there were not many birds; it appears many have moved
out of the area already. Scott will be trapping early this week, but
other than that, we are now done with winter-capture efforts for the
year and moving on to dealing with our resident breeders. Many of our
eagle pairs are already on eggs (incubating).
As far as the eagles we are following, several remain in the Chesapeake Bay region (adults V98 and U25 and nestling P91). Y94 and Y96, the two nestlings (now immatures) that we outfitted with satellite transmitters in 2004, remain in the general vicinity of their respective natal areas; perhaps learning where “home” is! One of our hopes is that these solar-powered satellite radios will continue working for years to come. If all goes well we will be able to study these youngsters’ movements and breeding habits right up to nest establishment.

Of the four satellite-tagged nestlings from 2005, three remain in
the same general area where they have been, and the fourth, P91,
as previously mentioned, has moved east into the Chesapeake Bay
area from inland VA. This is heartening, as I was beginning to
worry about this eagle and this move demonstrates he is alive and
well!
When will P04 Begin Migration?
Adult male P04 remains within our primary wintering area, but should
be staged to head north soon. If you go back and look at his spring
2005 data/map, you can figure out when he might leave.
