Field Notes from Eagleye Nye

Hello Journey North:

Hope everyone is enjoying the increasingly warm and beautiful spring weather.
Many eaglets have hatched now here in New York, and our dozens of volunteers are reporting in with stories and some great photos of "their" nests and status.

U21 Circle Route
P04 signals on April 12. How far and how long?

Beginning with our adults again this week, we see some movements and some settling. U21 appears to be searching! (Back to 80W.) She moved again this past week, back to the north-west near where she was nearly two weeks ago. Study the map to see her circle route above the Great Lakes. Do you think she is near settling down now?

U25 made a big move between April 10-13. This sub-adult female is now residing in SW Labrador, seemingly one of the favorite breeding places for our NYS wintering eagles!
I would bet money U27 is incubating egg(s), since we are getting great fixes and she hasn't moved a bit! This is one nest I would like to visit later this summer if I get time.

While close to it last week, it appears from the numbers that V98 homed in on and arrived at her old nest this week. I would expect we will start to see some high quality fixes as she initiates incubation within the next couple of weeks.

P04 was definitely on the move on 12 April (see the data), and appears to have "overshot" just a bit (see map below), then back-tracked south and east just a little and now seems static. Maybe he is at his nest site now?

As far as our immatures go, still not much movement (just locally) from our two 2004 birds, as well as for three of our 2005 birds. However, 2005 youngster P91 decided to take a trip, and he now resides way up in Maine near the New Hampshire border. This is quite a trip from where he was just a week ago; how far?

That's all for now from NY; enjoy spring!

This Week’s Bonus!

Eagleye reports many eaglets have hatched already in New York state. Take a peek into one of the nests this week courtesy of volunteer Scott Rando. Scott and his camera captured another great photograph of this very newly hatched eaglet.

This couple share a nest in southern NY on the Delaware River.

Thanks for sharing, Scott!

Big Move for U25
U25, a 4-year old sub-adult was captured 01/25/06. Last week she made a big move between and is now in SW Laborador – a popular summer spot for NY wintering eagles. Dig a little deeper to understand more about springtime Bald eagle migration. Study her movements and see how much you can learn.
