Strong Migration Continues Through Midwest

09/16/00 Salina, KS (38.50 N, -97.36 W)
"The students at St. Mary School in Salina, KS reported seeing a total of 58 monarchs over the weekend of 9/16 and 9/17. Most were single butterflies. Several were reported to be in small groups of 3-5. Terry saw lots of monarchs in McPherson, KS (ca. 30 miles away) on 9/13/00." St. Mary School (minnemangr4stmarys@hotmail.com)

09/18/00 Overland Park, KS (38.99 N, -94.67 W)
"The last few weeks I would only observer about 2 Monarchs per week...no directional movement observed until today. Today, the Monarch sighting rate was about 10 per hour."

"A cold front came through our state on Thursday evening (Sept. 14) On Friday, Sept. 15, I saw about 20 monarchs. I have seen about so Monarchs every day since Sept. 15." Besty Simpson (beejay_73632@yahoo)

"The Mequon monarch migration began last evening (9-13-00) and continues today. At noon on the recess playground students were counting one monarch "flyby" every 3-4 minutes, so the Wisconsin monarchs are on their way to Mexico." 09/14/00 Lewistown, MO (40.09 N, -91.82 W)
"They are here! Cold front came in about 6 am and I have looked every 15 minutes, finally at 11 am I spotted them! Flying by one a time, far above the tree tops. I have seen about 100 monarchs in about 45 minutes. The wind is from the north at about 20 mph and the sky has huge white clouds. The startling orange against the white is beautiful." "We are watching monarch butterflies fly south through our backyard at the rate of 18 per half hour. We started to notice them shortly before noon today." (twoifby@one.net)
