Symbolic Migration Update: November 20, 2002

Today's Report Includes:

The Journey South is Complete!
Hurray, Hurray! Your Symbolic Butterflies have arrived safely. They are resting comfortably in Angangueo, Michoacan, Mexico where the real Monarchs are now arriving by the millions.

Each year at this time, we also head to Mexico and join up with the butterflies. We'll deliver your Symbolic Monarchs to children in the mountain schools surrounding the sanctuaries. We'll also set up Symbolic Monarch exhibits beside the actual sanctuaries. Visiting tourists will be invited to "tag a Symbolic Monarch." In the backdrop will hang Mexican, Canadian and American flags and a huge banner proclaiming, "Migración simbólica: Uniendo a los niños de Norteamérica."

The camera and recorder are packed, ready to record sights and sounds of the monarchs' mountain refuge. Although you won't hear from us during the weeks ahead, we'll be busy arranging ways to "take you along" when Journey North begins in February, 2003.

3, 2, 1 . . . Lift Off! Discussion of CQ #1
Before leaving Journey North headquarters, UPS driver Todd Stenstrom asked you "Exactly how many days, hours and minutes do you think it will take the butterflies to reach Angangueo, Mexico?"

The UPS tracking system gave us the news--they were delivered in Angangueo on November 8, 2002 at 1:45 PM CST (13:45 on a military or 24 hour clock), only 3 days, 23 hours, and 45 minutes after they were picked up at the Journey North headquarters.

Congratulations to Mrs. Kloewer's students in York Middle School, York, NE, who submitted some excellent estimates. Her 8th period science class estimated delivery would take 3 days, 20 hours, and 37 minutes, just a little more than 3 hours off of the actual elapsed time. Her 7th period science class also made a nice estimate of delivery 4 days, 4 hours, and 4 minutes, only 4 hours and 19 minutes off the actual elapsed time.

Kudos also go to Jonathan Koch from France. Although his estimate focused on delivery time rather than elapsed travel time, he estimated that delivery would take place at 15:16 on November the 8, only 1 hour and 31 minutes off from the actual delivery time.

Thanks to all the classrooms that submitted estimates!

Journey North AsksYOU: Discussion of Challenge Question #2
fall2002_0014

We asked YOU the big question!

In our last update, we also asked you to estimate "How many Symbolic Butterflies do you think are flying to Mexico this year?"

Many of you accepted the challenge--a BIG math challenge--by studying the clues, and sending in your best estimates! How close do you think you came to the actual number of butterflies? Before we reveal the actual number, let's look at the some of your estimates.

Using our clues, there were three classes whose estimates were very close to the number of butterflies counted by us at time of the shipment:

57,975 estimated by Jonathan Koch from France.

57,690 estimated by Mrs. McKinley's 4th graders Willie, Briana, Calyn, Grant and Whitney at LaGrange Elementary School in LaGrange, Kentucky.

57,706 estimated by Joan Raybourn's students at Greenbrier Intermediate School in Virginia.

How did they calculate their estimates? (Click Here to Find Out!)

May We Have The Drum Roll, Please?!
Way to go students--you did a great job! Your estimates were very close to our initial estimates at the time the Symbolic Butterflies left for Mexico. At that time, the number of Symbolic Butterflies estimated by our tech person was . . . (drum roll please!). . . 57,691 Symbolic Butterflies. That means that one of your estimates was within one butterfly of ours, another was within 15 butterflies, and the third was within 284. Nice going!

Oops! Another Drum Roll Again, Please
In the end, however, our initial calculation of the total number of butterflies was not accurate, as there was some miscalculation of data on the computer. As it turns out, the actual Grand Total of Symbolic Monarch Butterflies that were flown to Mexico this year was. . . (drum roll again please!) . . . 50,666 Symbolic Butterflies! And that's Monarchs from 2,399 classrooms, 49 U.S. States, 7 Canadian Provinces, and 2 Countries!
