Keep Feeders Up
Observers have been surprised by stragglers after being sure they saw their last hummingbird! Many Ruby-throated Hummingbirds winging southward are going to Costa Rica for the winter, and they still have a long way to travel. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is only one of the 19 species of hummingbirds found in Costa Rica—and the only one that migrates. Such species-diversity is astonishing in a country only the size of Vermont and New Hampshire combined.

"Still have our lone hummer — So keep your feeders up and fresh for these late migrators. They'll probably be leaving soon for points south."

Mike in Oakdale, Minnesota (October 9, 2013)

"The hummers are dining and dashing. I'm keeping the feeder going!"

Connie G. in Maumee, Ohio (October 5, 2013)
