Hovering at Blooms
The hummingbird's ability to feed on nectar while hovering is a special adaptation. The unique figure-eight wing motion allows hummers to fly forward, backward, up and down, sideways, and even upside down for short distances. One scientific test showed that a hummingbird was able to hover for as much as 50 minutes in one place – a strength that allows these birds to gather nectar tirelessly.

"I caught this hummingbird enjoying nectar from a Cleome in the morning sun."
